If you're gonna go with Zachareth's plot deck, make sure that Two-Pronged Gambit is the first card you purchase:Exhaust this card during setup of the first encounter. Then, place a threat token from the supply beneath this card with either the threat or the fortune side face up. No hero player can know which side is face up. Reveal the token at the end of the quest. If the threat side is face up and the overlord won, gain 3 threat. If the fortune side is face up and the heroes won, gain 3 threat.
Basically, before the quest starts, you guess whether the heroes or overlord will win, and if you are correct, you get 3 threat.
Per the threat mechanic rules, the overlord gains one threat at the end of the quest, in addition to any other rewards. He also gets one extra threat if he wins.
Why is this so good? If you always play this card, and always guess heroes, the possible outcomes at the end of the quest are a net gain of 3 threat or a net gain of 1 threat:
Heroes win: -1 (spend to activate plot card) + 1 (overlord gains one threat at the end of encounter) + 3 (overlord guessed heroes) = 3
Overlord wins: -1 (spend to activate plot card) + 1 (overlord gains one threat at the end of encounter) + 1 (overlord gets one additional threat for winning) = 1
TL;DR Get Two-Pronged Gambit, always use it, and always guess heroes. You can't lose.
